Inner Practice: Traditionally, Zen clothes have always been comfortable and calming. In most Buddhist and Taoist countries, normal daily clothes have been solid colors, natural fabrics, and simple styles. In almost all contemplative centers now, the daily ware is kept simple and subdued as part of the inner practice of calming and clearing the mind. Today, people practicing mindfulness, martial arts, and Zen continue to ware natural fabrics in solid colors: brown, blue, white, black, gold, maroon, gray and kaki. These traditional color tones have proven helpful for cultivating concentration and awareness. While bright colors and most patterns visually stimulate the mind, most parents and teachers agree that children live in an overly stimulating and busy environment that does not promote mental focus or balance. Simple solid colors in clothing can help promote a calm environment. Solid pastels could work as well as the darker tones. Experiment for yourself. No doubt, there is a time and place for artsy clothes, and fun or flashy clothes that are abundantly available.
